Think you’d have a hard time handling 9 kids? Try handling 9 kids and managing £51 billion!
I love reading stories of successful women in business, and I hope sharing them with you leaves you as inspired as they leave me. So today I’m borrowing an Insta-trend, and bringing #WCW (aka Women Crush Wednesday) to the blog. Today’s #WCW is Helena Morrissey.
When Helena Morrissey was a bond analyst, she was told she was passed over for a promotion because she’d just had her first child. Wisely, she left the firm to work for Newton Investment Management. Since then she not only became CEO of the company, and grew their assets under management from 7 to 51 billion pounds, but she also had 8 more kids. Basically she rocks.
Like my other perpetual #WCW, Sheryl Sandberg, Helena was unsatisfied with the number of female business leaders, so four years ago she started the 30% club. The organization’s goal is to have FTSE-100 boards be comprised of 30% women by the end of 2015. In the UK the percent of women on boards is already up to 23% from 12.6% in 2010, and the organization has expanded to multiple countries, including the US.
So the next time you worry that you can’t have a family and a career (been there), let Helena Morrissey and her nine kids inspire you.
